Initializing references in C++

In C++, references allow us to create an alias for an existing variable. They provide a convenient way to access or modify the value of a variable through a different name. However, when it comes to initializing references, there is a slight difference in syntax compared to initializing regular variables.

Here, we declare a constant constant with a value of 5. Then, we declare a reference ref and initialize it with constant. Since constant is read-only, ref will also be read-only, and any attempt to modify ref would result in a compilation error.

const std::string& ref = getName(); // Initializing reference with a temporary object

std::cout « ref « std::endl; // Output: John Doe ``` In this example, we have a function getName() that returns a string. We declare a constant reference ref and initialize it with the return value of getName(). The reference ref can now be used to access the temporary string object returned by the function.

It’s important to note that references must always be initialized. Any attempt to declare an uninitialized reference will result in a compilation error.
